Arrested Annoyance
I have never harbored any ill will for Jason Bateman. In fact, I think he's quite handsome and hilarious. I remember enjoying him back in the day on The Hogan Family. I also quite enjoy Will Arnett, who has an incredibly sexy deep voice that makes me overlook his pronounced widow's peak. And I loved Portia de Rossi when she played Nell on Ally McBeal. But there is a big part of me that is filled with glee that Arrested Development was cancelled by Fox and that its future as a TV show is a dim one indeed.
Why do I enjoy seeing this show finally crash and burn? One of the reasons is the press. No reporter can find anything bad to say about this show. And I find that incredibly hard to believe, especially after viewing a few episodes from the first season. Yes, it is filled to the brim with talented, funny actors and memorable characters, but something about the show doesn't gel with me, and I don't understand why every magazine and newspaper can't stop raving about this show like it's some masterpiece.
But the biggest reason, by far, is the show's fans. It's fine and dandy that they enjoy the show, sometimes to extreme measures, but does Arrested Development need to come up in every show discussion? No. What bugs me the most about these fans is that they are so self important and so ready to denounce individuals who are not fans of this show as "dumb" because they "just don't get the humor." Uh... no. Some of us JUST DON'T LIKE THE SHOW. It has nothing to do with being intelligent enough to get the humor. I've heard comparisons of Arrested Development, Scrubs and My Name is Earl, and while I am a fan of the latter two and can understand the comparisons (no laugh track, similar show humor, common show writers), I do not appreciate being constantly being beat over the head that Arrested Development is SUCH a better show. They may have similarities, but they're shows about DIFFERENT THINGS, people.
